31st May to 7th June 2014 is Boat Safety Week
Following basic fire safety advice is crucial – this also applies to boats.
Fire services will be promoting safety on board boats during this week.Â
Here are some of our tips for keeping yourself safe on board:
- Fit an approved smoke alarm – and test it weekly or after a period of absence
- Fit a CO detector suitable for marine use, this will alert you to the threat of poisonous carbon monoxide
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Keep cooking areas free of grease build ups
- Avoid cooking when tired or you have been drinking, or have taken medication
- Extinguish cigarettes and candles carefully and fully
- Keep a fire extinguisher on board, have it serviced annually
- Make an escape plan – know how to get out
- Ensure all hobs have shut off or isolation valves                            Â
